Wedding Flowers = Art
Here’s why.
Every time I fill my workshop with flowers for a wedding, I am at the beginning of the creative process. Although I have many years of wedding experience, every wedding is different. Each client is different. Every June or July is different to each of the other Junes or Julys that I’ve worked. I can specify particular varieties of Roses from the growers if I wish, but I will never work with the same flower twice.
Each bouquet I make is a work of original art. Think about your suppliers as either craftspeople or artists. We get this wrong and too often think of them as people simply providing a service. And there is service involved. But this alone gives only a fraction of the story.
My job is to create pieces of original art ready to perform on time to perfection. (Can you feel my stress??)
I have spoken before about the training I received as a classical musician - it has served me so well as florist! The moment standing on the stairs waiting to walk onto the platform to perform is reflected in the moments during the set up at a venue. The hours of practice and desire to please the audience whilst maintaining your own integrity as performer is reflected in the relationship between a client, their guests and the creation of the designs I bring to the event.
When you listen to a live gig or concert, you are there, for that moment, as fully present as you can be, because you know it will not last forever. Once the curtain drops, or the encore has been performed, you will back out in the cold and that shared moment in time will be over. (Hope you’re appreciating the drama here).
I want to encourage wedding clients to experience their wedding day as the best live gig they’ve ever been to. Admittedly, this is hard when the client is often an integral part of the planning team, but if done well YOU CAN experience the euphoria, joy, and multiple layers of emotion and be really PRESENT for your wedding day. At a gig you throw yourself all in, you are there for every solo, every joke, every quiet moment amongst your friends discussing the set, every time you wonder how incredible it is to hear this music LIVE, just for you and the audience and how the experience of it is so different and better and heightened because it exactly isn’t quite how you could ever had imagined it. THIS is how you should walk down the aisle. THIS is how you should marvel at the banquet and sing with your friends as the night drifts on.
Seriously, dance like no one is watching. And treasure your flowers as the one-off, transient works of art that they are.
Let me be your floral artist for the day?
